Blackout Curtains for Kuwait Summers

How to keep bedrooms dark and living rooms cooler when the sun is at its strongest

Summer in Kuwait brings long days, intense sunlight and outdoor temperatures that regularly pass 45°C. Windows are where most of that light and heat reach your rooms — which makes the right curtains one of the simplest ways to sleep better and keep your home comfortable.

What makes a curtain "blackout"?

A blackout curtain blocks almost all visible light. This is achieved in one of three ways:

  • Blackout lining sewn behind your chosen decorative fabric — the most flexible option, because any drapery fabric can become blackout.
  • Coated blackout fabrics with a dense backing woven or bonded into the cloth.
  • Blackout roller blinds fitted inside or above the window, often combined with curtains.

Light-colored or reflective backings facing the glass also help reflect part of the sun's heat back outside before it warms the room.

Blackout vs dim-out

Blackout is the right choice for bedrooms, nurseries, home cinemas and anyone who sleeps during the day. Dim-out fabrics reduce light and glare without making the room completely dark — ideal for living rooms, majlis and offices where you still want some daylight.

Layering for Kuwaiti homes

The most popular solution in Kuwait villas is a layered window: a sheer curtain for daytime privacy and soft light, and a lined drapery or blackout blind for night. Each layer runs on its own track, so you choose the right level of light at any time of day.

Fitting matters as much as fabric

Light leaks around the edges — not through the fabric — are the most common complaint with blackout curtains. To avoid them we recommend:

  • Curtains wider than the window, with generous returns to the wall.
  • Ceiling-mounted or recessed tracks so light cannot escape above the curtain.
  • Curtains reaching the floor, and side channels for roller blinds where needed.

This is why every Omaia project starts with a site visit and precise measurements before anything is made in our factory in Al Rai.

Make it effortless with motorization

Motorized curtains and blinds can close automatically on a schedule — for example, before the afternoon sun reaches west-facing rooms — and open gently in the morning. With smart shading from brands such as Lutron and Somfy, you can control them from a keypad, a remote or your phone.
